K5 Singapore Mathematics – Core Ideas and Essential Strategies – Graduate Credit Option

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This is a foundational course in the Singaporean Approach to teaching mathematics at the elementary level. Students will learn the theory, strategies, and concepts that drive this unique and proven successful approach to teaching mathematics. It is important to note that these concepts are rooted in the most widely accepted educational research from around the world and can be applied in any elementary classroom. Some of the topics for this workshop include:

  • The 5 key learning experiences that boost student achievement and deepen understanding
  • Using Singapore’s 3-part lesson format to meet the needs of all students
  • Building understanding through the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to instruction
  • Journaling routines and practices for the mathematics classroom
  • The characteristics of effective guided and independent practice 
  • Meeting the needs of struggling learners in the mainstream classroom
  • The correct use of concrete manipulatives 

Learners who complete this course receive 3 transferrable graduate credits from Southern New Hampshire University. Upon satisfactory completion of your coursework, you will be provided an official transcript.

INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION

Dr. Yeap Ban Har and Drs. Bill & Amy Tozzo instruct this course. The media has called Dr. Yeap Ban Har “Singapore Math’s Michael Jordan” and “Royalty when it comes to Singapore Math.” He is considered to be one of the most accomplished trainers and speakers in the world on the subjects of K12 Mathematics, and the Singapore approach to teaching mathematics. Dr. Yeap Ban Har taught at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore for more than ten years. There he taught a range of teacher education courses and was involved in several funded research programs in mathematics education. Since 2010, he has held two concurrent positions as the Director of Curriculum and Professional Development at the Pathlight School in Singapore, and the principal of Marshall Cavendish Institute, a global teacher professional development division of Marshall Cavendish Publishers. He has since left his position at Marshall Cavendish Institute to take up a more active role at the Anglo Singapore International School, a Singapore school with three campuses in Thailand. He has authored dozens of textbooks, various titles in mathematics education and scholarly articles. His latest project is the new program, “think! Mathematics” by SL Education, an exciting new elementary Singapore Mathematics program co-authored with the owners of 3R Industries, Drs. Amy and Bill Tozzo. Amy and Bill share over 35 years of full-time classroom teaching experience, and 10 years of teacher education and leadership. Unlike many of even the most popular trainers, Bill and Amy practice what they preach and love what they teach.


GRADUATE CREDIT INFORMATION

Total Transferrable Graduate Credits: 3

Primary Method of Instruction:  Self-Paced online instruction comprised of professionally recorded videos of Dr. Yeap's 2-day Singapore Mathematics course and online readings, collaborative assignments, quizzes and written papers.

SNHU Course Code: PDMA 500TT

Evaluation/Grading: Modules are assigned points totaling 100 for the course and will be graded by Dr. Amy Butterfield-Tozzo or Dr. Bill Tozzo. To be awarded credit for the course the student must complete all lessons, and earn 73 out of the 100 possible points within 6 months of registering for the course. Once you have submitted all of your work for grading you will receive your grade within 5 business days. If you have not earned the minimum points required by SNHU for credit (73 points) you will be contacted and given feedback on your work. If you have met the requirements for credit, you will receive your grade and a link to a form you'll need to complete to process your credits through SNHU.

Accessing You SNHU Grades & Transcript: Within 10 days of receiving your form SNHU will process your graduate credits and your transcript will be available within 10 business days.
